A Battery Powered Lamp

Fall 2025

Length: 5 weeks

Project Brief:

Design a unique and innovative lamp that stands out with its style and functionality.

Inspiration

Brutalist architecture (mid-1900s) uses blocky forms, exposed materials prioritizing structure and function over ornament. It features repeating geometric shapes, rough textures, and a bold, monumental look.

Battery operated

Design Goals:

Easy to power on

Designated place for plants

Ideation

Heavily inspired by the brutalist architecture, the sketches focus on the strong, geometric elements that define this distinctive style, emphasizing bold shapes and raw, structural forms.

Initial CAD Model & Revised Procreate Render

CMF Exploration

The options were similar, but seeing different materials and colors showed how they subtly change the lamp’s look.

Dark gray and muted green evoke a brutalist mood: the gray is stark and weighty; the muted green suggests foliage and resilience.

Final Prototyping

For the final prototype we were limited to 3D printing due to time constraints. This was followed by sanding and spray painting to create a smooth base that is accurate to the rendering.
